Carduus thoermeri

Carduus thoermeri dry flower head.

Carduus thoermeri, also known as Carduus nutans subsp. leiophyllus, is a biennial thistle of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, that has also been introduced into North America and Australia. It is generally hard to distinguish it from its very closely related Carduus nutans, but the dry flower heads appear to be quite remarkable.
