Onopordum illyricum

Onopordum illyricum with Eryngium maritimum.

Onopordum is a genus of about 40 species of thistles, native mostly to Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Western Asia. Like many other thistles, they grow on disturbed land, roadsides, arable land and pastures, always depending on herbivores and humans to keep their habitat open and free from other vegetation. Most species are biennial plants that form a leaf rosette in the first season, and rapidly grow their flower stems in the second year.
In Greece there are at least 9 species to be found, three of which are considered as being rare.

Onopordum illyricum is a beautiful robust plant with grey-green stems and foliage, that may occur as a dwarf plant or exceed two meters in height. Native to southwestern Europe, it is also introduced into Australia and California. Very distinctive are the torch-like flower heads that are left behind when the plant is dry.
Closely related to O. illyricum is O. bracteatum, with its four subspecies, that is not so easy to distinguish. Onopordum bracteatum is more medium in size, its stems shorter and the whole plant may look more compact. The basal leaves and the flowers require more expertise to distinguish.
The images of the second species that are presented here, most probably belong to Onopordum bracteatum ssp. ilex, a species endemic to Greece and Bulgaria.

(The intention of this entry is to complete the plant profile initially posted on 07 December 2011).

The following images are most probably of the very closely related
Onopordum bracteatum ssp. ilex.
