Onopordum caulescens

Onopordum caulescens.

Onopordum caulescens is a robust biennial thistle of Greece and northwestern Turkey, and as the name suggests, it is a plant that produces many multi-branched stems. The flower heads are usually large with long, flattened towards the base or more slender, spiny bracts that are often tinged with a violet color, like the flowers. This is a species almost endemic to the islands of the Aegean Sea (Cyclades), that also has two subspecies one of which is considered rare.

Closely related to O. caulescens is Onopordum argolicum and Onopordum tauricum. All three of them are so similar that in some occasions the two latter are considered as merely misapplied names. It is also probable that O. argolicum is a synonym for O. tauricum.
