Turdus merula

Turdus merula, male bird (Common Blackbird).
Watercolor and color pencils on paper, 15x21cm.

The Common Blackbird (Turdus merula) is a very lively bird, and oftentimes very noisy, especially when delving under the rotting leaves on the ground for earthworms and insects. He is also a regular city dweller, wherever there is a park or garden with bushes and trees that provide enough hiding places, and as long as the weather stays cool. As the name blackbird suggests, the adult male bird is totally black - glossy black plumage and legs -, with a very distinctive bright orange-yellow bill and ring around the eye. The female is the same size but different in color: dark brown plumage, legs and bill, and a lighter colored throat and mottled breast.
This medium size bird breeds in Europe and S. Asia (it is also called Eurasian Blackbird) and begins his melodious "mating" song in late March. The male's song lasts until June, sung from trees and rooftops. It is a beautiful song especially heard at dawn in spring. You can listen to it clicking here and here.
